This interactive, two-day training provides a basic framework of understanding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, two spirit (LGBTQIA2+) youth and the unique challenges they face. It is designed to create dialogue regarding what it means to be an ally for LGBTQIA2+ youth by informing participants about terminology, challenges faced by LGBTQIA2+ youth in their homes, schools, and communities, and best practices to create brave and inclusive spaces. Through activities, participants are encouraged to explore their own personal biases, build their knowledge and skills in working with LGBTQIA2+ youth, and increase empathy.
After participating in this training, participants will be able to:
Describe various terminology related to LGBTQIA2+ communities
Engage with families of LGBTQIA2+ youth
Recognize LGBTQIA2+ bias and know how to respond when it comes up
Understand gender binaries and use of pronouns
Better include LGBTQIA2+ youth with intersectional identities, including gender, race, ethnicity, disability, religion
Move from savior to ally to accomplice for LGBTQIA2+ youth
Provide platforms for LGBTQIA2+ youth voice
Create brave and inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA2+ youth
